Villa Quinta Formosa

Faro Is Not
What You
Think.

Most guests arrive expecting a jumping-off point and leave with Faro as the highlight. The Algarve's capital has a medieval old town, a proper fishing harbour, and restaurants that exist for locals — not tourists.

This is a real Portuguese city, and the villa puts you five minutes from the middle of it — and within easy reach of everything else the region offers.

Faro city

A Real City.
Not a Resort.

The Algarve,
Done Properly

"Faro has what the resort towns don't — a real city, a real harbour, and restaurants that fill up because the food is good."

Where to Eat

Restaurants Worth
the Reservation

Faro's restaurant scene rewards guests willing to look beyond the tourist strip. The places below are where locals eat — book ahead for the best tables, especially in summer.

Tertúlia Algarvia Traditional · Old Town The place for honest Algarvian cooking. Cataplana, grilled fish, and a wine list that means it. Tucked into the old town — book ahead.
Faz Gostos Regional · Old Town Regional dishes done with care. Strong reputation among locals. The kind of place that fills up every night for good reason.
Mesa dos Mouros Panoramic · Old Town Walls Situated on the old town walls with views over the Ria Formosa estuary. Worth it for the setting alone — the food is also very good.
Tasca do Ricky Seafood · Local No-frills, maximum flavour. Grilled sea bream and local reds. Cash-friendly, always busy.
Os Dois Irmãos Seafood · Historic One of Faro's oldest restaurants. Straightforward, consistent, and exactly what you want after a day at the beach.
Madeirense Steakhouse · Local Favourite Popular with locals for a reason. Good meat, long tables, and the kind of casual energy that makes for a great group dinner.

Beaches

Which Beach, and When

The Algarve has dozens of beaches. These four are the ones worth knowing about based on where you are staying.

Ilha de Faro

Quinta do Lago

Rideshare

Uber available

Getting Here

Faro Airport is 8 minutes from the villa. TAP Air Portugal, easyJet, Ryanair, and British Airways all operate direct routes from major European cities. No connection required from London or most UK regional airports. Car hire is available at the airport and recommended for getting the most from the region.

Getting Around

A car is the right answer. The Algarve is spread out and the roads are excellent. Uber operates in Faro city and around the airport -- useful for evenings in the old town when you would rather not drive. Car hire from the airport takes 20 minutes and costs less than most people expect for a week.

Groceries

Galeria Shopping Centre is 3 minutes by car -- full Continente supermarket, pharmacy, and restaurants. The covered Mercado Municipal is open weekday mornings for fresh fish, local produce, and regional cheeses. Or let us pre-stock the villa before you arrive.

Algarve Wine

A Note on Algarve Wine

The Algarve has four DOC wine regions and most visitors leave without trying any of them. The wines pair exceptionally well with local food and cost a fraction of what you would pay for equivalent quality elsewhere.

Ask at any good restaurant, or pick up a few bottles from the Faro market. The whites and roses in summer are worth the discovery. The reds from Tavira and Lagoa are worth bringing home.
